What's stopping your blog from reaching it's full potential?
I want to start by looking at what's stopping you from having the best blog. What are the reasons that keep you from making it big?
- Do you lack time, money or know-how? Or maybe it's a lack of inspiration?
- Do you struggle with writing?
- Do you find it difficult to keep engaging your readers?
- Do you feel like you don't produce enough high quality, engaging content?
When I first started blogging, I lacked all of these. But over time, I learned how to create great content, how to build links and promote my content and started accepting that running a blog requires an investment of time and money.
Blogging is great, but it's not free! If you want to see results, you need to be prepared to invest in yourself and in your blog.
I'm talking about investing time (in creating the best possible content) by having a strategy and being consistent. Not just going with the flow.
I'm talking about investing money to make your blog better too, by purchasing a great blog theme, investing in tools and buying great courses that can help you continue learning…
Of course, these aren't essential things for you to have a successful blog – but without them, your blog isn't going to rank as highly as it could in search engines, you're going to struggle with design and will most likely fail to attract new readers.
So with all that in mind, let's look at how to make your blog the best it can be, with my fave tips and strategies…
1 – Write on what you're Passionate about
A blog without passion will be noticeable, that's why it's so important to make sure you write about what you love, care and are passionate about.
Hopefully, you're going to be blogging for years to come and that means you need to love and want to talk about the blog topic you're publishing on.
You need to have the DESIRE to share your blog with the world and you can't really expect people to come to you if you don't seem excited or care about what it is your writing about.
What you can do: sit down with some paper and a pen and think about all the things you're passionate about. It can be anything and everything, so for now just let it all flow out…
Write them all down and then out of those things, look at what gets you going the most… What could you talk about ALL the time and help others with. Is it something you have lots of knowledge in and could give great advice on…
That's the type of blog content you need to write about!
2 – Write in your Own Style
When you're passionate about something, you tend to write how you speak and that's what people relate to.
Blog posts work best when it comes from your heart and true self and you'll stand out from the crowd if you're writing in your own style.
Although this can be a difficult task, once you've found your ‘voice', people will notice and take note of what you have to say online.
Every blogger has their writing style – some like to write like they talk, some use a lot of images within their articles, some just talk about facts and figures etc…
Either way, go with what feels natural to you. Don't try to be someone else or copy the way another blogger is writing. You'll actually find it's harder trying to be like someone else rather than just being yourself.
What you can do: just blog the way YOU want to and make sure everything you're publishing is YOU! That's who people are reading for… you 🙂
Just be yourself! Write how you talk and engage with your readers how YOU would want someone to talk to you.
3 – Be Authentic and the REAL You!
To be truly successful in blogging, being your authentic self is so key! People are drawn to what they can relate to.
Be honest with yourself about who you are, what your strengths and weaknesses are, so it shines through in your content.
Have fun with it and remember – just because you're blogging, doesn't mean every post has to be deep or emotional.
It's good to show people who you are online because they'll respect you more and YES, people do love and resonate with more personal content, because it's real, but it doesn't mean every piece of content you put out there has to be vulnerable or your whole life story…
Be excited when you write about something, but don't be too formal or ‘professional' because this will come across as boring and people won't want to read what you have to say if you're not being yourself.
At the end of the day, if people don't trust you, they won't read your blog posts.
Blogging's all about developing a connection, so that when you do have something important to share or even promote, they're more inclined to listen because of the relationship that has been established between you!
“Being Yourself” might sound like a cliché but it's definitely true and I cannot stress enough how important this is.
What you can do: think about how people are perceiving your blog.
Are they understanding what you're saying?
Is the message clear? If not, take a step back and re-write as an authentic blogger, one who's honest with their self and what they're sharing with the online world.
4 – Be Active on Social Media
Social media is a big part of blogging nowadays, so if you want to get your blog out there, you do need to be posting about it constantly.
You don't have to post something every day, but being consistent will help you build a bigger audience, as people will then start to recognize you and your blog!
The best way to stand out from the crowd is not necessarily through your writing itself, but by being active on social media.
Having a great story or article out there is one thing, but getting noticed is another entirely and if no-one knows about you, then it's all a bit of a waste!
People are busy – if they don't know you exist, then they're not going to stumble across your blog.
You need to be out there promoting yourself and building that audience.
Social media gives you an opportunity to do this in a very simple way- without spending any money!
Instagram's great because it's so visual and people are really engaging with the content on there and Pinterest is a visual search engine where people go to get amazing info and look at pretty images…
What you can do: take some time out to think about which social media platform you want to be focusing on.
Which platform do you feel most comfortable using?
Which one are you most familiar with, or use the most?
Also, look at where your target audience hang out online?
What platform would they spend their time on?
Don't spread yourself too thinly by using all the different platforms, or else you won't have time to concentrate on each one and give it the attention it deserves!
Just pick one or two to start with and build from there…
5 – Be Active in your Niche Community
Niche blogging is a great way to get known- especially if you're blogging about a specific topic or industry that has its own niche community.
By sharing your content on a platform where that particular audience already is, you'll be able to quickly start building a loyal following of people who share the same interests as you!
Being part of a niche community can help build up that trust and respect, as by engaging with them and showing that you know what you're talking about, they'll be more inclined to come back and read what you have to say.
What you can do: take some time out to consider these questions…
Who are your target readers?
Where do they hang out online?
How can you integrate yourself into that community?
Can you contribute any content or feedback of your own?
You have to be active though, so don't just share your blog posts and then walk away- engage with other people who are involved in the community too.
This will help you stand out from the crowd and show that you're not just a ‘troll', but someone who's writing about this topic because you care and it interests you.
6 – Set goals for your blog (big and small)
Goals are important for everyone in general and blogging is no different.
The only difference between blogging goals and regular goals is that blogging goals can be achieved online. You can either make them public or private, but I'd recommend making them public so that you have that extra push to reach them!
Maybe you can do this by sharing a post on Instagram, so that you can hold yourself accountable for the challenge you've set yourself.
This also allows your followers and readers to interact and cheer you on – what bigger and better boost is that!
Setting goals is a great way to get yourself organized… It's about making sure you know exactly what your blog is about, why it exists and where you want to take it.
From there, you can make some short term, mid-term and long term goals for your blog. This will help you stay focused and on track, so that instead of fizzling out after a month or two, you can continue to drive your blog forward!
What you can do: sit down and set yourself some goals.
Whether it's to do do something consistently on your blog each day, reach 100 subscribers in your first month or make £50,000 in your first year… Whatever it is you want to achieve, write it down so you can visualise it regularly!
Make sure to include these goals in your monthly/weekly and daily planner. Work them into your schedule and make it happen…
7 – Write on topics people want to know about
You have to remember when writing for your blog, it's not just about what YOU think is interesting, but what other people might want to know more about.
Try considering these questions…
- What topics are people most interested in?
- Who would be most interested in my topic?
- Why do they need this information?
- Who am I talking to when I'm writing this blog post/page?
This last question is important because it helps you consider your audience and what they want from your blog.
Even if the topic is interesting to you, would someone who doesn't know about it find it useful?
What you can do: make a list of topics people might be interested in within your niche.
Carry out some research! Look online where your target audience hang out and see what kind of things they're reading and commenting on.
What are other blogs in your niche writing about? What do they want to know? What do they seem to be super interested in?
Is something trending? Is there a problem that's being asked over and over?
Once you've found a topic, carry out some keyword research and see whether it's something viable.
Keep this list handy so that you always have inspiration on-hand when you need it!
8 – Engage with your readers
An important part of building a community is to create readers who are invested in your blog, so answer comments on blog posts quickly and give people the attention they deserve.
When you reply to their comment or question, it shows that you're passionate about what you do, which then makes them want to stick around!
Also, you can try and answer questions in an ‘Ask Me Anything' post.
This will show your reader that you want to be as transparent as possible and know what's going on. It also helps them connect with other readers, which in turn keeps everyone involved and happy!
It can be daunting to reply to comments, but you'll soon find that it's actually quite rewarding!
What you can do: reply to comments as soon as you can.
Remember – your readers want to know if their concerns/questions/suggestions are important and need timely responses.
As your blog becomes more well known and popular, it may prove difficult to answer all the comments and questions. This is where a roundup post can come in handy to answer all the questions in one go, rather than to everyone individually…
When you're starting out though, you definitely want to respond to everyone.
9 – Interact with other bloggers in your niche
Don't just focus on your readers, but also the other blogs/bloggers in your niche.
If you really enjoyed reading a post of theirs and found it super helpful and inspiring, you could link to their post in your social media with a quick note telling them how much you enjoyed reading it.
This lets the blogger know that you exist and are aware of them and you never know, they might want to return the favour in the future.
You may even end up collaborating on a post or article with them at some point, which is great for traffic and credibility…
If there's a new blogger just starting out and you love something they've written, another thing you can do is offer up some words of encouragement and comment on their blog posts too!
This all helps not only other bloggers (because blogging is a community) but yourself too, as you'll be seen as helpful, kind and not just someone whose only got self interests at heart.
What you can do: make a list of your favourite blogs in your niche and start interacting with them!
Offer help where you can, even if it's just a simple comment or share on their Instagram or Facebook post…
10 – Have Authority Bloggers Guest Post on your blog & Guest Post yourself too!
If you can get some authority bloggers in your niche to guest post on your blog, it's a great way to get more traffic and build relationships.
Not only will you be providing additional content for your readers (which they'll love), but it could help bring in a new audience too!
It all comes back to relationships in the end anyway. The better your relationship with other bloggers in your niche, the more likely you are to get posts on their blog in the future.
Of course, if you're contributing content for them, hopefully they'll want to do the same for you too!
Guest posting is one of the most effective ways to drive traffic.
When you guest post on another blog, you're essentially promoting your own content to their readers. Your target audience is there so it's a great way to get more eyes on your work!
It's an added bonus that you'll likely be linking back to your site too which will help with your SEO.
TIP: Always link back to your best performing content so that you increase its reach and get more readers coming to your site.
If you want to try guest posting, look through other websites/blogs in your niche and find out whether they allow guest posting opportunities.
To request a guest post , all you have to do is either find the section in the footer that says “Write a Guest Post” or something similar, or find the contact us page (normally at the bottom of the site) and send them an email.
Just remember to keep it personal and not like you're sending out mass emails…
When it comes to guest posting, there are plenty of benefits…
You can build relationships with influencers in your industry, have the chance to be published on a new site, plus you can broaden your readership and build backlinks too.
If you've written an amazing post about something related to the blog's topic then send it over! You never know when they may want to publish it for you.
The more guest posts you have published on high authority sites, the better. Remember that!
What you can do: mix it up with your content… try and get someone to guest post on your blog every month or two if you can as it's a no brainer!
Not only do they give you more content (which in turn can help with SEO and save you time writing posts) but they also bring more traffic to your site…
Make the most of guest posting opportunities as well. Put yourself out there and you never know where it'll lead!
11 – Create Evergreen content
Evergreen content is content that people can come back to time and time again.
These are posts that won't go out of fashion, get lost in the archives or get old over time…
It's also content which you should come back to and update as and when needed.
Most evergreen content tends to be a blogs pillar posts – the main posts for each category on a site…
For example, if you're blogging about how to start a blog, then this content will be evergreen because it's helpful advice that people will always want to know about…
Evergreen content is also highly shareable, which brings more traffic to your site. But it's not just sharing that helps with this…
Google loves evergreen content too because it shows their search engine users that you're creating helpful and up-to-date content about the topic they're searching for.
What can you do: try and create evergreen content as often as you can. It's just as important as fresh content.
It brings readers back time and time again, which in turn builds up your authority and generates more traffic…
12 – Create a Content Calendar
Sometimes having too much content to write can be overwhelming, so how about creating a content calendar instead?
Having this at hand means you always have an idea of what to write or publish and when.
This also helps in terms of SEO, because Google loves fresh and new content…
A content calendar can be created on the basis of however many days a week/month you want to post.
As an example, if you wanted to publish 4 posts a month (one post a week) then you could follow the scheduling below…
- Week 1 – How To Post
- Week 2 – Affiliate Post
- Week 3 – Evergreen Post
- Week 4 – Guest Post
Remember that every post you write should have a purpose – to make money, generate traffic, build your email list etc…
Just keep it consistent, easy to remember and most importantly have fun with it!
I don't use any fancy tools at all for my Content Calendar, because I simply have an Excel spreadsheet. This spreadsheet was a freebie included in an amazing SEO course I took and I've just adapted it to my needs…
What can you do: put together your own content calendar using either Excel or another tool you have. Try and publish one post per week if you can – at least to start with when you're getting your blog off the ground.
It's incredibly important that your blog is filled with fresh content for search engines…
13 – Consistently post content. Don't stop writing
Consistency is key with blogging. It's so important to continually write posts and content for your blog…
What this means is that you should be writing new posts on a regular basis, publishing them when you want and sticking to that schedule – no matter what!
If something comes up and you can't post on that day – then just move it to another day.
The main point is to stay consistent as this makes you more reliable as a blogger, and gives your readers something to look forward to!
Once you've made a commitment to write regularly, be sure to stick with it…
Even if your blog isn't getting many views or traffic – keep writing as your hard work will pay off…
Don't worry if you miss a day, just continue on the next. It's kind of like exercising – once you've gone along once, it will become a lot easier to do again!
Make the most of your posts. Once you've created a new post, don't just publish it and leave it there. There are so many ways to continue promoting it via social media, email marketing etc…
You want to get as much mileage out of each blog post as possible!
What you can do: keep track of your deadlines and start setting realistic ones for yourself so that you don't get overwhelmed…
If you can only write one post every two weeks, do that. Don't try and write everyday or week if you physically can't maintain it!
14 – Make sure your content is easy to read. Write in small paragraphs, use bullet points, H2 & H3 headings etc…
Writing great content isn't just about what you say, but more importantly how you say it.
If you follow some basic guidelines then this will ensure that your readers can easily digest the information that's on your blog…
The best way to do this is to think of your posts as you would a story or document – use small paragraphs, bullet points and where appropriate use headings, i.e. H2's & H3's…
Also make sure you break up your text with screenshots and images as this will help the reader to digest it a lot easier.
In terms of language, make sure you write in a clear and concise way. If the reader finds it easy to read they will be more likely to come back for more…
I think if your blog is going to stand out from the crowd, then adding a personal touch with your writing is key.
What can you do: don't forget to add some personality!
Write in your own voice, be interesting and engaging and you'll find that your readers will love you for it! And if they like what they read – then they will come back again & again.
15 – Have SEO friendly content
Make sure each blog post you write has a focus, and is well written so it's easily indexable on search engines…
This means that you should include relevant keywords where it's appropriate to do so, but also make sure your posts have a natural flow…
If there's too much SEO going on – it can be off putting for readers.
It's important to strike a balance between the two – but ultimately if you're writing good content then the search engines will find you!
The point is to make the reader feel informed, educated and entertained by what they're reading…
What can you do: make sure each post has a focus.
If you're writing about the “Best Make-Up Brush for Foundation”, make sure that's your main keyword and it's written in the title of your blog post – but don't overdo it…
16 – Make sure your blog is easy to navigate and responsive
It's of course important that your readers can easily read your posts on their mobile devices, so having a website that's responsive and mobile friendly is a MUST!!!
You also want them to be able to get back to the home page quickly and find what they're looking for with ease.
Make sure you use plenty of internal links on each post to link back to the home page, or previous posts etc and also add some navigation links at the top of your blog, so that they can easily get back to the home page from a blog post if need be.
When you're writing a post, keep in mind how it will look when displayed on your blog.
Don't just think about the text and information that's on there – but also how it looks visually with all of your added photos, screenshots and graphics etc…
It's not exactly rocket science, but making sure your blog looks professional and visually appealing can go a long way in terms of attracting new readers…
What can you do: keep the design as simple as possible!
Too many bells and whistles can distract from what really matters with blogging – and that's your great content!
17 – Have a great “About Me” page
Your readers want to know about you and your blog, so make sure you have a great “About Me” page for them…
The About Me page is usually one of the most read pages on a blog or website too, so you want to make the most of it!
If your personal bio sounds interesting, they'll be more inclined to stick around…
Also, make sure you have a well written “How it all started” section so the readers know what your blog is about and how it came to be…
You can also create a great FAQ page, where you answer frequently asked questions from readers. This will give them more insight into who you are and how you write your posts etc. I'm actually looking to add this to my own blog very soon…
What can you do: make sure your own “About Me” page is entertaining and informative.
This is YOUR chance to tell the world who YOU are!
18 – Always be building your Email List
You always want to be building your email list, so that you can build a strong relationship with your readers and get more sales too…
Having an email list is the best way to keep in touch with all of your readers and anyone who subscribes will receive regular updates and info straight into their inbox!
Don't just send them updates and blog posts though – make sure you're sending them your latest and greatest content, offers and give-aways too!
What can you do: Don't ignore the power of the subscribe button – although you may want to have something more enticing than the word “subscribe” on it.
It's important for any blogger to encourage people to sign up and join their email list as much as possible (and it gives you more opportunities to sell as well)…
19 – Create Catchy, Enticing blog post titles
The title of your blog post is everything and it can make or break how many views and clicks you get!
Your blog post titles should be enticing enough to encourage people to click on your articles.
If they see an interesting title, they'll probably want to click and read the post.
That's why making sure your titles are catchy and attention grabbing is so important!!!
Some key elements to a great blog post title are:
- Short, sweet and to the point
- Eye-catching and stands out
- Powerful and Persuasive words
- Tell readers what to expect
- Spark curiosity
- Use numbers
- Be accurate
- Use your focus keyword
If you can make a reader curious – you've done half of your job as a blogger – and you've also given them a topic they need and want to investigate further!…
What can you do: keep your blog post titles catchy and ‘click worthy'!
Powerful and persuasive titles are the best…
20 – Have shorter URL's
When you're blogging, the URL for your post is very important. A short URL is definitely preferable and it makes it much easier to share and remember too!
Long URLs can be difficult to remember and they're not as easy to share with your readers either…
Many blogs tend to customise the URL's for articles, especially ones which are related to affiliate links, as these tend to be long and bulky…
I use a custom link plugin called Pretty Links, which is free and super easy to set up and use.
You simply install, activate and you can create whatever link you want.
You can see in the screenshot below how simple it is to do:
- Add title – whatever you want the link to be called – make sure it's relevant and makes sense to you
- Target URL – this is the URL you want to link to (probably the ugly, bulky, long one)
- Pretty Link – this is the nice short link you'll create, which is added to the end of your blog/site URL
Keep the URL's as short as possible – but also make sure they're accurate and include your focus keyword if possible…
Why? Accuracy is key when it comes to SEO and the search engines…
What can you do: always make sure you have the shortest URL you can for every blog post.
Don't string it out over 10+ words… As short and sweet as possible is best!
21 – Have clear Categories on your site
Make sure all of your posts are categorized so that each post has it's own place on the blog. It makes everything look neat, organized and easy to find.
Depending on what niche you're in – this could be very useful when it comes to SEO too…
If you use your focus keyword throughout your blog post, you can optimize for SEO purposes. However, the categories are an added bonus that makes it easy for Google and other search engines to crawl through your site and find content!
Categories also help your readers know what to expect when they're clicking…
Just make sure that all the categories you choose relate to the blog niche you're in…
What can you do: set up your categories and make them easily accessible…
Use accurate titles which describe to readers what they'll find when clicking through…
22 – Link to relevant, Higher Authority sites
Linking to other higher authority sites within your niche (known as link building) is a great way to get extra visibility to your own blog.
When you link to other sites within your niche, it makes it easier for Google and other search engines to crawl through your site, giving you more credibility too!
If you have a guest post on your blog – make sure that the links to other sites are relevant too!
The last thing you want is for it to look spammy or irrelevant, as this will take readers out of the experience and cause them to leave your blog.
Don't abuse your links! Use them sparingly and only when they make sense.
For example, if you're writing a blog post about the amazing books that have changed your life – and your affiliate link is to a site like Amazon, then this would be absolutely fine (you just don't want to go linking to random sites which seem irrelevant).
What can you do: try and link out to at least one authoritative site within your niche.
Link out only to relevant sites, using them sparingly.
Make sure that the links are accurate and if you're linking out to a site like Amazon, link to the specific product mentioned in the post!
23 – Have beautiful, bold Featured Images/Pin Images that make people want to click
A big part of getting readers on your blog is making sure that the blog posts themselves are interesting and appealing to people.
This means having a great looking featured image which is going to grab their attention and make them want to click through.
Always have great, bold photos which capture the reader's attention!
In terms of pinning images – don't be afraid to get creative!
I've even written a step by step post sharing how you can use Canva to do this!
I love looking through Pinterest and seeing the different images that people have pinned. Not only is it relaxing for me, but it gives me a ton of inspiration for my own pin images.
The ones that always stand out to me are those with beautiful photos and quotes, especially when they're bold and colourful!
How about you? Think about what kind of images you like seeing on Pinterest?
Before you publish each blog post, take a look at the image and think “would this make me want to click through?” If it doesn't, then you may want to change it…
What can you do: always make sure that your featured image/pin images are eye catching, captures their attention and makes people want to click!
Make sure the featured image is within the correct size dimensions too (ideally 1200 x 628 pixels which is good for WordPress themes/builders currently) and don't forget to optimise alt text too.
24 – Include more Infographics in your posts
Infographics are a favourite with everyone. Looking at a beautiful image with info on can be far more appealing than a sea of text.
They're typically shared way more than blog posts. They increase the time spent on your site (your readers will want to consume the information on the infographic) and they also keep visitors on your site for longer (due to increased content consumption).
So make your blog posts more appealing by including them!
There are also some great benefits to using infographics too…
Infographics provide a ton of information in a single image and can be used to visually explain things.
They're designed to be easily shareable on social media, meaning that they'll help you build more backlinks and drive traffic. They'll help you with your SEO too as Google values them highly!
What can you do: try and include infographics in as many of your posts as you can.
Not only are they highly appealing to readers, but they'll help you with SEO, attract more traffic and promote backlinks too!
25 – Be Patient and put in the Hard Work blogging
The final tip I want to share is being patient with your blog.
Blogging is hard work – I'm not going to lie. It's time consuming and can produce many a challenge along the way.
Yes, there will undoubtedly be plenty of frustrating moments when you won't feel like writing on your blog and when you don't see an increase in readers for weeks on end.
This can truly give you a lack of motivation to continue…
When you first start blogging and it isn't getting any traction, it can be disheartening – but if you keep working at it, creating high quality content (consistently) then you'll get there!
